THERMAL ARCHITECTURE
The origins of the Thermalism Renowned thermal spa station, Royat-Chamalières has started to develop in the 1850s. The visit of Napoléon III and the Empress Eugénie followed by the arrival of the railroad have contributed to the expansion of an exceptional thermal town, place for recreation and relaxation.Strolling in the thermal park, you will be able to discover the vestiges of the gallo-roman thermal establishment, the neo-classical architecture of the pump room as well as the superb mosaic which decorates the entry of the Saint-Mart small house (1912). All around, you will be astonished by the decorative wealth of the various big hotels and the bourgeois large houses. The gallo-roman vestiges
The mineral spring of the Rocks (within the town of Chamalières) is a place of veneration as stated by the newly unraveled ex-votos from recent excavations : pilgrim statues, naked silhouettes or dressed in tunics, and mostly anatomic board sketches, are as many unusual testimonies of the cult of our ancestors for this miraculous spring (Ex-votos exhibited at the Bargoin museum of Clermont-Fd).Moreover, some excavations, performed within the walls of the thermal facility boundaries exposed last century the vestiges of a gallo-roman pool. The Saint-Mart small house
Previously an establishment of care, the Saint Mart small house has known recently some significant restoration and has become a permanent exhibit room on thermalism. Through a fun and interactive tour, you will be able to discover the history of the thermalism in Royat. Information on guided tours at the Tourist Office.Guided tours
